DAY WALK: Sugar Loaf / Y Fâl to Grwyne Fawr (Monmouthshire / Sir Fynwy)

WHAT WE'LL BE DOING
This is a spectacular walk up one of the best-known peaks in the Black Mountains, South-East Wales, called Sugar Loaf / Y Fâl. There's a steep climb up the mountain to 596m where you get 360 degree views of the surrounding hills and mountains, then a gentle descent to follow the Grwyne Fawr valley through fields and woods around the north and west flanks of the mountain back to the car park.
We ascend rapidly to the top of the mountain, which at 596m has impressive views all round, with many distant peaks to gaze at. The top of the mountain is also home to a couple of tame sheep that will come up to you and steal your food. I kid you not, they're aggressive and persistent (I don't think they've read the 'How to be a sheep' manual) Then we descend via the northern flank of the mountain to a stream which we follow around the curve of the mountain before a gentle ascent near the end of the walk takes us back up to the car park.
