WHAT WE'LL BE DOING
Altogether now, 'the ladies of the harem of the Court of King Caractacus, were just passing by…' Bet you didn't think it actually existed, did you? Well get booked on this day walk and you can sing and do the moves in the very spot where the Court of King Caractacus met – though it's actually quite bleak and windy.
Setting off from Pontyclun, we'll follow the Ely River to the Royal Glamorgan Hospital before heading up into the deep Forest of Llantrisant, looking down over the Royal Mint (Llantrisant is known locally and quasi-affectionately as ‘the hole with the mint').
Out from the forest we follow the Ffordd-y-Bryniau Ridgeway over Mynydd Meiros and Mynydd Portref before passing through the huge turbines of the Taff Ely Wind Farm (not literally), on Mynydd y Maendy (where we can sing our song). From here the views on a good day can take in over the Severn Estuary as far as Cornwall; on a bad day, about as far as your fingers, so keep them crossed please!
After the final summit among bronze age burial mounds on Mynydd y Gaer, we descend into the Ogwr Valley where from the village of Blackmill, we follow a nice flat abandoned railway line along the tumbling river to Brynmenyn. Past the ancient Tondu Ironworks we'll finish at Tondu Railway Station, from where we'll catch a train the 3 stops back to Pontyclun (cost £2-3).
