DAY WALK: Dartmoor: Multi-Tor Tour (Devon)

DISTANCE: 11km (7 miles)
WHAT WE'LL BE DOING
From the car park we'll cross the River Lyd, heading up towards the distinctive feature that is Widgery Cross, erected by Devon painter William Widgery in 1887, to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria.
Once past there we head across the moorland, admiring the views which will include numerous Tors - Arms Tor, Little Links Tor, Chat Tor, Green Tor and Great Links Tor should all be visible on the way. The last of which we pass behind (and cross a second stream) to reach our intended lunch spot - Bleak House - now in ruins it was built in 1879 for the manager of the nearby peat works. After nourishment we head on, passing up between the two rocky outcrops of Lower Dunna Goat and Higher Dunna Goat to reach the top of the hill upon which is Great Links Tor, where we should have yet more good views of the surrounding moorland. We then head down onto disused railway, once used by miners to transport the peat, and follow it most of the way back to our starting point. We may decide to head into a pub after the walk.
