DAY WALK: Church Stretton (Shropshire)

DISTANCE: 22,5km (14 miles)
WHAT WE'LL BE DOING
We will be climbing over Caer Caradoc by the steepest route visiting the fortification remains where Caratacus was allegedly defeated by the Romans - the last native chieftain to defy them. A brief stop to enjoy the views and catch our breath before we descend via Little Caradoc to the valley floor to climb the Lawley. Not as steep as Caer Caradoc but nearly as high. This is a wonderful whaleback hill with fantastic views to both sides. We will stop near the summit for lunch. We might see some people hand gliding from it. Then it's a gentle amble along the ridge slowly descending to the valley floor again. We will then walk to Hoar Edge and along to the village of Enchmarsh and then we will enter the area known as the Wilderness. Probably a stop here as we will be able to see the Lawley and Caer Caradoc and marvel at how much we have already done. Finally leaving the wilderness we cross an old drovers track. Here those who don't feel like tackling the last hill can follow the track back to the base of Caer Caradoc and Church Stretton. When I led this walk for another group only 4 of the 15 guys on it elected to continue with me up the last hill. Hopefully our full party will now climb up to the Battlestones. Not so high but after the other two it will feel like it. From the Battlestones we will be able to see the full route we have walked. Having climbed up it will be worth wandering along the Wilstones finally descending near Gaer Farm and route back to the base of Caer Caradoc via Helmeth Wood.
