Cycling Weekend In Cheddar (Somerset) Friday 11th to Sunday 13th June, Cheddar, Berkshire
11 June 2010: Cycling Weekend In Cheddar (Somerset) Friday 11th to Sunday 13th June
3 day road cycling weekend based around Cheddar (Somerset) targeting leisure/experienced cyclists. Important: please note that this event is organised in conjunction with CycleOut so you will have to pay a small membership to join.
This weekend will be based around the tourist centre of Cheddar, famous for its Gorge, Wookey Hole and of course Britain's best known cheese.
For those coming from London, the nearest railway station is Yatton (just 12 miles West of Cheddar) which has some direct services available from London Paddington and more frequent services by connecting at Bristol. From Yatton it is a scenic route taking the Strawberry Line Heritage Trail following a former railway line through the Cheddar Valley Railway Nature Reserve. Nearer the time I will suggest some train times from London/Reading so that people can travel together.
Those coming by car will find that Cheddar is located just 21 miles South of Bristol (close to J21 of the M5).
Alternatively, for those looking for a longer ride on the Friday, depending on numbers we may consider the option of a ride from Westbury (35 miles).
Accommodation will be at the 3 star Cheddar YHA costing £15.95 per night. Breakfast is available at £4.95 per day and a bike store is available.
Alternative B&B location is available in the village (contact Mike for any details).
In the evening we will eat in one of several pubs in the evening.
The full ride itinerary will be provided nearer the time and depending on numbers we may split into more than one group to accommodate those looking for leisurely vs more challenging rides.
Provisionally the details are as follow:
- Friday 11th June AM Travel to Cheddar (Optional longer ride from either Bath or Westbury). PM Optional visit to Cheddar caves and gorge
- Saturday 12th June 50 Mile Day ride/s starting at 9:30am from Cheddar YHA
- Sunday 13th June 50 Mile Day ride/s starting at 9:30am from Cheddar YHA. Option to return back to London in the evening or Monday morning
Cheddar has a cycle shop which is open every day apart from Sunday and provides serving and cycle hire
In order that we can secure the booking with the Youth Hotel, if you are interested in attending this event then please let Mike Emery [email address available to members only]) know by Friday 2nd April.
OUTeverywhere member organiser
This event has been added to the OUTeverywhere calendar by Mike E from Reading in the Berkshire area.
I'm an easy going straight acting person looking to meet people locally that either have similar interests or can inroduce me to new ones! Interest wise I tend to spend a lot of time keeping fit, especially cycling, swimming and walking. I am also into the great outdoors generally, vegetarian cooking, reading (especially crime fiction) and music (especially rock/indie/jazz/pop) .
