London-based theatre company, Barefaced, will perform 'Candidates for Change: the Road to Con-Dem Nation' from 27th-31st July. It is the first play to tackle the new politics of coalition Britain within the restraints of post-credit crunch London. It explores the Cameroon dilemma: do we look out from the summit and let sunshine rule the day? or keep it real? Gay playwright Stuart Barrow is a former researcher, adviser and speech writer to top Conservatives, including Michael Portillo, Michael Howard, Francis Maude and the new Culture Secretary, Jeremy Hunt. In 2000 he wrote what became known as Michael Portillo's 'pink pound speech'.
'Candidates for Change' follows the lives of six London women (three gay, three straight) and a man of two dreams. Amber is a libertarian Portillista aiming to join her ex-Blairite girlfriend, Ruta, on David Cameron's A' List but a past romantic snub of leading Tory Party donor Margot Monford-Mill, an ex-MP with a taste for ambitious women matched with a love of revenge, threatens all. Dips Monford-Mills, Margot's daughter, is a public school downstart desperate to keep it real' at work in Shoreditch while best friend (and comp girl) Siobhan dreams of sunshine winning the day at their Mayfair home. Who will fare better as the new politics dawns and who will win the heart of Jago Lanson, a PR man obsessed with authenticity? And how does Wikipedia fan Natalie fit in? Is she more much than a receptionist and leading Boris Johnson fan?
Over two acts, Barefaced Theatre reveals all questioning ambitions, appearances and even the nature of reality itself. A play about relationships, dreams, changing personalities and rare insights into the conflicts over the importance of sexuality between gay Conservatives.
Playwright Stuart Barrow is a former adviser and speechwriter to numerous politicians including Michael Portillo, Michael Howard, Francis Maude and Jeremy Hunt. "Candidates for Change" is his first play.
