5 March 2008: Bristol Cinema - The Band's Visit

An Egyptian police band goes astray on a visit to Israel, eventually ending up in a small Israeli town in the desert. This film about seeing past differences in language and culture was cruelly denied an Oscar nom. because there is too much English!

"'The Band's Visit' is about people - mostly awkward, all real, well- and ill-behaved in turn - and not about agenda, ideology, politics. It's an unsentimental people movie , enormously likable, a treasurehouse of humanism."

"droll and self-deprecating in ways unforced and natural. It feels like Jim Jarmusch's early pictures: travelogues and time capsules populated by types coaxed, slowly and generously, into three-dimensionality. It's the most hopeful of films in its suggestion that the possibility for peaceful coexistence comes somehow from the recognition of a collective unconscious; a poem about the selfishness of love delivered in an alien tongue carries with it still the essential truth of the emotion."

"I'd be lying if I said that The Band's Visit isn't touching and uplifting and all those other audience-friendly emotions against which film critics are believed to religiously steel themselves. But in a season rife with movies (The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, Grace Is Gone, The Kite Runner) that aggressively pry open viewers' chest cavities and yank on their heartstrings, Kolirin's film merely plucks gently. It has an elating lightness that belies its heavy subject-peace, or at least conversation, in the Middle East-and it leaves you filled with a sense of possibility."

"powered by excellent performances - just the right side of deadpan - and never remotely preachy. The Band's Visit could easily have become a clunky message movie, but Kolirin maintains a sure-handed balance of humour and heartache."
