Bristol Cinema - The Golden Compass, Bristol, Somerset
12 December 2007: Bristol Cinema - The Golden Compass
The first volume in Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy. In a parallel Oxford, young Lyra Belacqua begins a dimension-crossing odyssey that builds from a merely atypical children's adventure into a complex (and quite dark) philosophical epic.
"From the outset you are drawn into a world that is so similar to our own but also wildly different. There are airships for travelling powered by what look like energy spheres rather than combustion engines and carriages powered in a similar way but still with a semi Steam Punk Victorian feel. The cities and environments are wonderfully realised and vividly colourful."
"Dakota Blue Richards as Lyra played a brilliant lead role and I suspect we will see more from this talented young lady. Her character was very believable and was exactly as I would've pictured her from the book."
"Nichole Kidman was both stunningly radiant and menacing as Marisa Coulter. Again she perfectly suited the role and in my opinion fully justified the choice that Phillip Pullman made in asking that she be in the movie."
"The Golden Compass is a skillfully crafted film, with spectacular effects, and vast and beautiful vistas. The armoured bears are magnificent. The acting is also a plus for the production, matching the best of the Potter films. Kidman is a slinky ocean of evil, though other advertised actors (Daniel Craig, Eva Green) are hardly in the film. Not that anyone matters besides young Dakota Richards. She dominates the movie, and is one of those child actresses that casting agents dream of. She'll wrap you into her story."
