An authentically tangled web created by a love affair and its consequences upseting the order of individual destinies. The friends becomes a protagonist in, and witness to, a contemporary tragedy - the onset of the AIDS crisis in the 1980s
'writer/director Andre Techine revisits the onset of the AIDS epidemic in mid-1980s Paris, with this compelling account of the impact made by a young man Manu (Johan Libereau), on the lives of police lieutenant Mehdi (Sami Bouajila), novelist Sara (Emmanuelle Beart), and their doctor friend Adrien (Michel Blanc). Fast-paced and impressively acted by its ensemble cast, The Witnesses acknowledges the reality of untimely death and celebrates the "miracle of being alive."'

'Téchiné effortlessly depicts the 1980s' easy-come-easy-go zeitgeist without the use of the clunking, clichéd period references to which lesser directors so often resort. Instead, he evokes a mood of recklessness not synonymous with happiness as well as the foreboding of an imminent fall from grace. In various interviews, Téchiné has confessed that the onslaught of AIDS and those early, anxious years of its unforgiving contamination are subjects close to his heart and experience. He witnessed the reality of those grave times and quietly summons today's audience to witness again, or, perhaps, to really see for the first time.
