Bristol Cinema - Milk, Bristol, Somerset

25 January 2009: Bristol Cinema - Milk

A skilfully and tenderly observed account of the life and work of Harvey Milk. The first openly homosexual man voted into significant U.S. public office in 1977, a pivotal moment in the gay movement's struggle for civil rights.

'All the actors excel, notably Hirsch, Franco and Diego Luna as Jack Lira, the Mexican lover whom Harvey neglects with tragic consequences. But Josh Brolin is simply astounding as Dan White, revealing the inner torment of a man at odds with his own emotions.'

'The beauty of Milk is that it is not a defeated film, built on tragedy, and sleazily designed to elicit your tears. It is a smart, sensitive, funny, and utterly captivating account of a life and a time in history that concludes, most adirambly, with the sentiment that in spite of tragedy people must always have hope.'

'To say that Penn's performance is the finest of his career is an understatement. Penn's performance as Milk is so astounding, such a complete and utter transformation that it almost seems frivolous to consider anyone else for the Oscar this year. James Franco, who seems to be finding his cinematic way after a few big budget misfires, is funny and sweet and tender as Scott Smith, while Hirsch excels as the activist Cleve Jones. Diego Luna, as a neglected lover of Milk's, is simply mesmerizing'

'I felt as though I had spent a couple of days — hilarious, intense, inspiring days — immersed in 1970s San Francisco.'

'Milk is a great film. Go see it with someone you love.'
