Bristol Cinema LLGFF Tour - Breakfast with Scot, Bristol, Somerset
5 July 2008: Bristol Cinema LLGFF Tour - Breakfast with Scot
Closeted couple Sam and Ed find their carefully balanced lives unsettled when Ed's young nephew comes to live with them. Scot is an expert knitter addicted to boas, makeup and show tunes. To protect Scot, and himself, Sam tries to straighten him out
Part of the London Lesbian and Gay Film Festival on Tour programme. This film was lambasted by some fundamentalists even before it was finished for "promoting homosexualization of small children" and the featured Canadian National Hockey League "becoming a willing partner with the fringe elements of the radicalized homosexual agenda and their ultimate goal of worldwide sexual anarchy." Unfortunately I believe that those of us who actually see the film may find it much less dangerous to the world's social fabric than these 'commentators' suggest!
'daring in its examination of sexual identity and the roles we play in society. Making young Scot the effeminate one while Sam is butch and closeted is more than just a humorous role reversal, it also allows Sam to comes to terms with his inner child'
'a rather nice corrective to the misguided "I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry". Instead of applying macho hostility to a nominally progressive storyline, the film undercuts such attitudes with a firm sympathy for 'nancy boys' and other outsiders.'
'Breakfast with Scot manages to impress thanks to its brisk, breezy pace and the uniformly personable performances.'
'written with a natural honesty that keeps us thoroughly involved. And even when the standard movie structure kicks in for the final act, we're caught off guard by how sweet and touching the predictable finale actually is.'
