9 January 2008: Bristol Cinema - Into The Wild

Fresh from college Chris McCandless walks out of a privileged life and into the wild in search of adventure. This story of man against nature shines a light on family, idealism, aloneness, the dangerous, heartbreakingly brief, romanticism of youth.

"this is a serious, personal movie about what it is to be human, and what happens when we admire nature more than humanity: does it make us less than human, or do we fulfil and even transcend our humanity? There is food for thought and food for every kind of feeling in Sean Penn's outstanding film."

"'Into the Wild' is a literal free spirit of a motion picture, but it also remains a poignant, tragic, and unforgettable tale of misplaced human desire."

"Penn's artistry is so mature, so stunningly evolved from his earlier films The Indian Runner, The Crossing Guard and The Pledge, that he offers his insights without any hectoring or lecturing. McCandless' powerful story is told with an elegant restraint, and that makes it all the more evocative."

"Emile Hirsch at the centre of it all, giving a performance that will rightly garner him Oscar consideration and looking so spectacularly handsome that it's almost distracting at times. Like the young Monty Clift in Red River or Marlon Brando in A Streetcar Named Desire, he's an actor who cannot possibly be photographed from a bad angle and the scruffier he gets, the better-looking he gets. At times, the film breaks into lyrical slow motion as if even Sean Penn realized the necessity to give in to the sheer magnetism of an attractive actor on screen rather than downplay it as some less confident or secure male directors might be apt to do. Wisely, he's right there with Hirsh every step of the way, camera up-close to try to bring us as close as possible to a man who in the end remains more than a little enigmatic."
