Bristol Cinema - Fox and His Friends, Bristol, Somerset
24 August 2008: Bristol Cinema - Fox and His Friends
Fassbinder, the disfigured wunderkind of the new German cinema, made over forty films before he died, at just 37. Bleak as it is this story of a search for love, exploitation, and wealth is one of the earliest films to openly feature a gay lifestyle.
'At the delicate art of combining the bizarre and the mundane, nobody is more skillful than Rainer Werner Fassbinder. His formula is wickedly simple. He begins, often enough, with elements of lurid sexuality. Then he films against type, looking for deliberately banal characters and locations.'
'Years before Hollywood made its first faltering steps in the direction of a new frankness about homosexuality, Fassbinder was miles out in front. He was so comfortable with gay characters that he felt no hesitation in portraying some of them as selfish, brutal and grasping -- as evil, indeed, as heterosexuals in other movies. Here is a movie about characters who define themselves by their sexuality, but the movie doesn't. It takes the sexuality as a given, and defines them by their values and morals. And in the sad, slow descent of Fox, Fassbinder indicts their materialism and narcissism.'
'pure, craftily imagined, expertly disclosed raw materials of a human life, an ace snapshot from 27 years ago that still feels contemporary and pressing.'
'Social Darwinism has rarely been so entertaining, or movingly portrayed, on film. And the film was, in its day, a landmark for depicting gay people with psychological and emotional depth, not to mention bitchy humour and chiselled abs.'
'a keen social analysis of the different classes, racism, the horrors of consumerism, the materialistic ... gay bourgeois scene.'
