20 February 2008: Bristol Cinema - There Will Be Blood
A sparse, sprawling, epic set on the incendiary frontier of California's turn-of-the-century petroleum boom. Daniel Day-Lewis shines with ferocious intensity as a ruthless self-made oil tycoon who moves in on the poor but oil-rich Little Boston.
'There Will Be Blood is an achievement in cinematography, acting, writing and film-making unlike anything released in 2007. It is a film that puts its focus on wholly unlikable characters and dares to take you in deeper despite this fact. Like Raging Bull, it is a character study of a man who you would not normally want to know and who you will be unable to forget about after it is all said and done.'
'Anderson gives us one of the most beautifully shot and directed films in recent memory, truly at the top of his craft on this one. Every moment feels more epic than the last, until the film becomes such a towering cinematic spectacle that the end leaves the viewer exhausted. It's truly an experience not to be missed.'
'This is a dark, uncompromising film, thrillingly original and distinctive, with a visionary passion. It is a movie against which all directors, and all moviegoers, will want to measure themselves. Paul Thomas Anderson is doing something new with cinema, and you can hardly ask for more than that.'
'Hypnotic, poetic and often downright strange, the remarkable result is every bit as combustible as the black stuff itself.'
