25 November 2007: Bristol Cinema - Yacoubian Building
An epic adaptation of Alaa Al Aswany's bestseller this is an absorbing, beautiful film that delves into the nitty-gritty of modern Egyptian life, including corruption, forbidden love, fundamentalism and the hitherto taboo subject of homosexuality.
'"The Yacoubian Building" weaves narrative strands into a dense, diverse tapestry, and the film by the young director Marwan Hamed serves as a commentary on contemporary Egypt - with salient debates about religious fundamentalism, gender roles, tradition versus modernity, homosexuality, political corruption, even abortion. Coming from a culture where many of these topics are taboo, it's nothing short of groundbreaking.'
'Hamed balances these story lines with skill, elicits credible performances from his cast, and deftly handles variations in tone and scale. At times, the film, Egypt's official Oscar submission, is epic in scope. At others, it's intimate and tender.'
'With recurring themes and treatises of God's Law vs. Man's Law, women's newfound rights (or old-school exploitations) plus other breaks in cultural traditions, this luxuriant bundle of pulp frictions is enlightening and articulate, a pleasurable peek into class struggles so many years and miles removed from our own. '
'Marwan Hamed has created a magnum opus with his first film and this long but compelling journey is a real eye-opener into the social problems, corruption and hypocrisy that beset this modern Arab state.'
'an epic amalgam of interweaving stories that suggests the mood of contemporary Cairo as effortlessly as the eponymous edifice symbolises the nation's stately decline.'
