23 May 2007: Bristol Cinema: Zodiac
An exhilarating, exhausting, slice of true crime cinema. Based on the 70s Zodiac murders, a series of (still) unsolved crimes by a publicity-hungry killer who goaded reporters and cops with cryptic clues. Another masterpiece from David Fincher?
'Director David Fincher (Se7en, Fight Club) orchestrates the proceedings with obsessive compulsiveness, concentrating on the nitty-gritty of investigative procedure and delivering serial killer cinema's answer to All The President's Men.'
'make no mistake, you will be hooked and creeped out big time. Fincher stages the first murder with blood-chilling intensity. A hooded killer walks up to a car parked on a lovers' lane and opens fire on a teen couple. It could be the stuff of a typical CSI episode. But Fincher transcends exploitation. We feel the swiftness of the crime, the shock of what follows and the reeling sense of life snuffed out in seconds.'
'A film this painstaking and tenacious won't appeal to those in it strictly for the blood lust. Fincher is a powerhouse filmmaker, but he doesn't pander. He shakes you up in ways you don't see coming. Thanks to him, the still-new movie year, littered with barf-inducing Hollywood formula (hello, Norbit), has busted out with something unique and unmissable.'
'ZODIAC is an intensely involving mystery that is both chilling and infuriating in all the right ways. It is itself its own puzzle remaining to be solved.'
'This is probably the best movie that could be made about this case without completely fictionalizing it. The acting (Jake Gyllenhaal, Robert Downey Jr., Mark Ruffalo) is unfailingly top-notch, and at various times the story is frightening, titillating, intriguing, and even comical.'
