5 May 2008: Brighton Bank Holiday Real Ale Ramble
We are Lesbian and Real Ale Drinkers, part of the Campaign for Real Ale. We're going to crawl round five different good real ale venues (ending up at the first, so six all togther) with the objective of drinking real ale and having a good evening.
Meet at The Evening Star, 55-56 Surrey Street at 5.00 p.m. (ON 5TH MAY - note date, this originally went out with the wrong date on!)
Surrey Street runs parallel but to the right of Queen's Road as you walk out of the Railway Station (Queen's Road is the road straight in front of you, heading down to the sea front). The Evening Star is about a minute away, on the left hand side of Surrey Street. Arguably Brighton's premier real ale venue, until recently the Star was a brew pub, home to the Dark Star Brewery, but the brewery has now moved to larger premises near Burgess Hill. The Evening Star is still a Dark Star pub, and usually has three Dark Star beers on the bar. It also has a few guest beers, and cider on hand pump.
We'll leave the pub after a couple of beers at about 6.15 p.m. Turn left out of the pub and left again and head down Gloucester Road into the North Laine area (ie walking parallel to the sea front). We'll find the Basketmakers at the bottom of the road, at 12 Gloucester Road. The Basketmakers is a 'community local' real-ale pub, decorated with smoking memorabilia. Until recently it was a Gale's pub, until Gale's got taken over by Fuller's of London. Now it serves a good range of Fuller's and Gale's beers, all good stuff.
After one here we'll just cross over the road (literally), at around 7.00 p.m. to the Eagle Bar and Bakery at 125 Glouceter Road. This is a Cask-marqued Green King pub with three real ales, and is a bit more of a 'trendy' style of pub.
After one here we'll just walk round the corner, at 7.45 p.m. to the Great Eastern at the bottom of Trafalgar Street (number 103). This is more of a traditional locals' pub again. On handpump it serves Harvey's Sussex Best Bitter, Old Rosie Cider and two guests (when we called in to suss out this crawl he had Hog's Back, but he assured us this would be finished by the time we called back on Bank Holiday Monday - they emphasise local southern breweries).
At 8.30 p.m. we'll had back up towards the Station. the Lord Nelson is at 36 Trafalgar Street on the left. We're only two minutes away from the Railway Station at this point - in case you needed to run off for a train - but do stay with us, as this is a Harvey's pub with a good range of Harvey's beers (unusual even when Harvey's available). Again a favourite for Brighton real ale drinkers.
At about 9.15 p.m. well head back up Trafalgar Street to the Station and the Evening Star for a last drink before those who need to get home from the Station need to leave us.
Hope you can make it, all welcome.
