Bloomsburys in Sussex - Walk Out, London
22 September 2007: Bloomsburys in Sussex - Walk Out
An 11-mile circular walk from Berwick in Sussex, with great views of the South Downs. At the end of the day we'll visit Berwick Church, which has murals by members of the Bloomsbury Group. We will be having a picnic lunch.
This is an 11-mile circular walk from Berwick Station. It will take in great views of the South Downs. In the morning we pass through the village of Alciston, then on through quite dramatic landscape for a picnic lunch in the middle of nowhere. It's very beautiful.
In the afternoon we circle back round to walk upriver along the Cuckmere for a while. We will head for a large tea garden in Litlington, like last year, or a few steps further into the village of Alfriston for tea.
Last year on 23rd September we did a partly similar walk from Berwick, led by Andy Harris, a lovely man with a cheeky sense of humour and a warm heart, who sadly collapsed and died in a field just short of Berwick Church. When we get to this point, we'll visit the church, with its murals, which last year, under the circumstances, we were unable to do thus completing the walk which Andy started. We will return to the field to spend a short time remembering Andy, perhaps with a period of silence or the sharing of a few words. The station is about a mile further on after that, with a nearby pub if we need somewhere to wait for the next train.
St Michael and All Angels church in Berwick is a small, 12th century church complete with Saxon font. It contains murals dating from WWll painted by Vanessa Bell, Duncan Grant and Quentin Bell. Vanessa Bell was the sister of Virginia Woolf. The murals caused outrage locally at the time because the artists depicted, in rather attractive poses, their somewhat bohemian friends as Christ, various angels and as other biblical figures.
The Charleston Farmhouse, where Vanessa and Duncan lived, painted and entertained, is close to Berwick as is the River Ouse where Virginia committed suicide in 1941. If some walkers wanted to stay over in Brighton or Lewes on Saturday night Charleston could be visited on the Sunday. In addition the journalist and author Cyril Connolly is buried in the churchyard. We will reach the church at about 5.30 pm. The churchwarden, Mrs Lumsden, has advised that the church remains unlocked until 6pm.
Return to London: we should aim to catch the 19.20 train from Berwick. If we do not make this then the next train is at 20.20 pm. In any event the journey time back to Victoria is about an hour and a half.
Feel free to invite yourself along to this event. We are a very friendly group, and have had successful monthly walks for over a year. We welcome everyone who comes along. There are usually 25 or more people on these walks.
