BGSO - Birmingham Gay Symphony Orchestra, Digbeth, Birmingham, Alabama
21 December 2008: BGSO - Birmingham Gay Symphony Orchestra
The BGSO is Birmingham & the Midlands' very own lgbt Symphony Orchestra. Come & play great music ranging from the Classics to the Popular; the serious to the down right camp! A fun, friendly & lively charitable group. All abilities and ages welcome.
BGSO rehearsals are fun and friendly, and take the form of warm-ups, learning new music, a coffee break and then a good play through of what we've learned - sometimes on the stage overlooking the lake. Bring a music stand!
All music is provided and we give members copies to take home to practice.
We welcome people of all sexualities and gender identities, and heterosexual people are equally welcome. Young people under 18 or 16 welcome.
We aim to be a charity, working in and for our lgbt community, and the wider artistic community of the city of Birmingham and Central England. To this end we aim to participate in key events in the lgbt calendar, such as Birmingham Pride, World AIDS Day, Christmas events, 'Five Days of Fun', Birmingham ArtsFest & Fierce Festival.
Sometimes we make use of larger spaces in The Custard Factory, such as the Theatre, the Gallery, The Old Library, Reception, the lakesides and the stage on the (interior)lake.
The Orchestra works closely with both 'Dancing Bear Academy of Music', who act as Agents on our behalf, and with the other Community Groups based within the Academy: 'A Cappella Birmingham' - Brum's lgbt Classical Chamber Choir (meets Wednesdays 7.30-10.00pm), and; 'Instant Opera Co' - the Midlands' very own lgbt opera group (meets 2nd & 4th Sundays).
We also enjoy a strong link with the LGSO - London Gay Symphony Orchestra, who are the only other otchestra of the type in the UK. This outstanding, well-established group are very much our role model. We hope to work collaboratively with our friends in the LGSO in the future.
The BGSO, choir & opera group are promoted through Dancing Bear Academy for paid, corporate work, professional performances and for weddings, civil partnerships, funerals and parties etc. 'Dancing Bear' can also provide instrumental teaching on any of the main orchestral instruments, as well as on piano, keyboard and computer music systems.
We have a wide variety of social events and we pride ourselves on being a group of fun loving, easy going and creatively hard-working people from all walks of life. We have a good number of student players from Birmingham Conservatoire, and from other universities and colleges in Birmingham and the Midlands. Some players travel a considerable distance to be with us, hence why at present we just meet on the 1st & 3rd Sunday afternoons of the month.
Curently we make a charge per rehearsal for membership of just £4 full price, £3 concs. £2 students & £1 under 18's/16's. However, this is always negotiable if your funds are limited.
Come along and join for a whole lot of fun!
