Beer festival at the Bankes Arms on Studland, Studland/Bournemouth, Dorset
13 August 2011: Beer festival at the Bankes Arms on Studland
Come to Dorset to spend an afternoon at a beer festival with a sea view from the Studland cliffs. Then walk back leisurely along the beach, and perhaps swim in the sea, in time for supper in Bournemouth.
The Bankes Arms beer festival runs from 11-14 August and has a selection of real ale, ciders and perries. There will be a barbecue and the pub itself also serves food. See http://www.bankesarms.com/ and, when they update it for this 2011, http://www.bankesarmsbeerfestival.com/ for more details. We'll go on the Saturday because this is the most convenient day, although unfortunately this clashes with Brighton Pride.
If you are coming from London, meet us in London Waterloo station at 08:45 on the concourse side of the barriers by Platform 9 (where the NR website thinks the train might be) for the 09:05 Weymouth train. There are often long queues at Waterloo to buy tickets so please arrive in good time or buy your ticket in advance. See below for details of fares.
Or if you want to meet us at Bournemouth meet at 11:00 at the route 50 bus stop at the bus station at Bournemouth Station, outside the south entrance by platforms 3 and 4. We aim to catch the 11:10 (but if we miss that the 11:30) bus route 50 towards Swanage, which takes about an hour. See http://www.wdbus.co.uk/ for more information. There is an £18 Group Explorer for up to five people to travel, which will probably be the cheapest bus ticket.
We aim to get to the Bankes Arms for about 12:30. I would not recommend driving there because the Swanage ferry normally has an extremely long queue in both directions (but you can instead drive around Poole Harbour via Wareham on the A351) and parking might be difficult.
We'll probably start walking the 5 km back along the beach at about 15:30. This will give us a chance to go for a dip in the sea if the weather is good and you are hardy enough. Note that a section of the beach is nudist.
Anyone who wants to continue drinking at the beerfest can catch the bus that stops at Studland at about 17:34; those who make it to the other end of the beach will pick it up at 17:41 from the Shell Bay ferry terminal, returning to Bournemouth at 18:32. (The next bus stops at Studland/Shell Bay at 17:54/18:01 and the following bus at 18:39/18:46; that is the last bus that reaches Bournemouth in time for the 20:22 train to Waterloo.)
We can decide on the day whether to book a table for supper in a restaurant in Bournemouth for about 18:30, or get a takeaway if the weather is nice.
For those returning to London, we will aim to take the 20:22 train from Bournemouth, which arrives at Waterloo at 22:22. The only later trains are 21:12 which arrives at 23:22, and 22:12 which is a stopping service that arrives at 01:04.
For a day return from London Waterloo to Bournemouth, the walk-up return fare is £44.60, which qualifies for discounts on a Network Railcard or the 4-for-2 GroupSave offer. Cheaper fares for advance tickets are available, currently £14.50 to Bournemouth and £10 coming back, but note that these tickets commit you to travelling on a train at a particular time.
