Audition for "The Anniversary" - Theatre West Four, Chiswick, London
12 September 2010: Audition for "The Anniversary" - Theatre West Four
Theatre West Four is an amateur dramatics group based in West London. Our Next production is "The Anniversary" in November, and we are holding auditions on 9 and 12 September.
Theatre West 4 's next production will be the black comedy "The Anniversary" by Bill MacIlwraith, to be performed at the Questors Studio, Ealing W5 on November 17th to 20th.
Set in the mid-1960's, in the living room of the family home South of London, this three act play charts an evening of so-called family celebration, as they gather on the parents' 40th wedding anniversary, despite the death of the father years before. (A film version was released in 1968 starring Bette Davis.)
The characters are:
Mum - the matriarch of the family, she manipulates her three sons to her own ends, insanely jealous of any woman who comes into the fold. She is firmly in control, vicious, ruthless and endlessly manipulative in her dealings with her sons, established and potential partners, and outsiders alike. Age - late 50s / 60s
Henry - the oldest son, single, and a bit of a joke to the family. Firmly under his mother's thumb. Aged late 30s.
Terry - middle son, torn between his mother and his wife, weak of character and terrified of both. Aged early - mid 30s.
Karen - Terry's wife. Appears defiant of Mum and in control of Terry, but it is a battle she is used to losing in the end. Aged late 20s - mid 30s.
Tom - youngest son. A bit of an apple to his Mums eye and seen to be a playboy. Finally intending to settle down, he shows bravado in the absence of his mother, but easily loses his nerve when challenged by her. Aged mid 20's to early 30's.
Shirley - Tom's girlfriend. She's not met the family before, and Tom has kept her secret until now, along with their engagement. Appearing mousey to begin with, it transpires she has more guts than the rest of them. Age early 20s to early 30s.
All are good, strong roles, and get a fair bite of the action in a play full of twists, laughs, and downright frightening characters.
Auditions will be taking place on Thursday 9th September at 7.30 pm and Sunday 12 September at 6.30pm at The Friendship Club, Age Concern, Oxford Road North, Chiswick, W4 (there is a slim possibility that the venue for the Tuesday may be somewhere else, but if so we will advise you in good time)
If you would like to audition please contact [email address available to members only], specifying:
- Which character(s) you would like to read for
- Which date you will be auditioning on (9 or 12 Sept)
Either prepare a dramatic or comedy audition piece beforehand of your own choice or be prepared to sight-read from the script at the audition.
Rehearsals will be twice weekly on Thursday evenings and Sunday afternoons.
We will also require backstage crew, so if you are interested please also contact [email address available to members only].
