'Amor, dicea' - Love songs and other stories, BRIGHTON, East Sussex

31 July 2008: 'Amor, dicea' - Love songs and other stories

As part of the Brighton and Hove Pride celebrations QUEERBAROQUE will play a concert of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century music by LGBT composers on period instruments. Music by Handel, Lanier, Monteverdi, Rosenmuller and Bach.

Queerbaroque is an ensemble of professional and ex-professional singers and musicians dedicated to the exploration of GBLT music repertoire of the seventeenth and eighteenth century.Massimo Redaelli, director of Queerbaroque says: ‘Although consciousness of gender identity in the seventeenth and eighteenth century is not comparable to what it means to be out in our society, a lot of eighteenth-century music contains messages of same-sex love (such as Handel's duets) and even situations where travesty roles allow for the representation of transgender characters (the role of Arnalta in Monteverdi's Poppea). As a music group interested in baroque music, our aim is to explore this repertoire alongside the music of gay composers who suffered discrimination because of their sexual orientation (such as Johann Rosenmuller). We feel this is important on two grounds: firstly to highlight the considerable contribution of LGBT individuals to our musical and cultural heritage; secondly to provide a sense of grounding and pride to today's gay community through the rediscovery of works that are often masterpieces. LGBT artists were not a quaint little appendix to the history of music, but central figures who often shaped history'.
