What are the aims & objectives of this writing course?
The aim is to create a supportive environment in which writers of all levels can explore the creative process, experiment with short story styles, and gain an understanding of basic narrative techniques. It will be an opportunity to work on short exercises, and explore different ways of creating, crafting, and shaping stories. Exercises and related discussions will provide you with the skills to create both fictional and autobiographical stories. You will be offered homework, thus enabling participants to form a consistent writing pattern. Participants will also produce a body of work, and work towards a habit of writing.
Whilst the aim of the course is to learn new wirting techniques you will also meet new friends who share your passion for wirting in a supportive and open environement.
What will be the content, structure and themes?
The course will run as a practical creative writing workshop with a short writing exercise and a longer writing exercise in each meeting. Exercises will focus on the nuts and bolts of creative writing, such as:
i) Point of View & Perspective: Looking at how point of view determines the tone/voice of the story.
ii) Dialogue: Looking at how dialogue conveys a sense of a character; creating dialogue from memory; exploring the relationship between dialogue and subtext.
iii) Characterisation: Looking at the details that go into creating a character.
You will deepen your understanding of the craft of writing through exercises on:
i) Language: Looking at how sentence length, the sound of words, and punctuation influence the tone of the story; how each word is a choice; finding a personal vocabulary; and exploring each participant's relationship to language/words/writing.
ii) The Emotional Aspects of Creativity: Looking at creativity as a process of discovering an individual way of telling stories; working with pre-conceived notions of 'right' and 'wrong' ways to write stories; turning self-censoring mechanisms into creative forces; exploring ways to work with writer's block'.
There will be the chance to read your work and give supportive feedback to each other. You will also be invited to bring in work you have created at home, and receive more detailed and in-depth feedback.
What will you take away from this course?
By the end of the course you will have:
- The skills to articulate your experiences and craft them into aesthetic forms (both autobiographical and fictional).
- An understanding of the elements of short story writing as well as of the creative process.
- Gained the tools to give thoughtful and constructive feedback to others, as well as self-appraisal that is honest and helpful.
- Made new friends!
