Stan Tracey has occupied a very special place at the heart of jazz in this country since the early 60s, when his landmark Under Milk Wood suite marked the emergence of a uniquely British response to the African-American traditions of the music. Now in his 81st. year, he remains complete original. His piano style, with its echoes of Ellington and Monk is essential Tracey in its witty and absorbing twists and turns - and he is a composer of real substance, the creator of a series of extended suites that combine a rare command of melody and groove, laced with sumptous brass and reed textures.
Tonight's concert time-travels through Tracey's music, with the London premiere of a major big band piece, Genesis; a sequence of pieces for a supercharged Octet that features a cracking front line of soloists from successive younger generations; plus solo and trio sets. The icing on the cake - a very rare performance of Tracey's spectacular piano duet with Keith Tippett, whose intensely creative spirit fires an approach to improvisation that is postively breathtaking in its sonic sweep. Guy Barker, Alan Barnes, Mornington Lockett and Mark Nightingale are amongst a team of stellar soloists also featured.
Produced by the Barbican in association with Serious. This is part of Jason Eden's 40 events at 40 celebrations. Jason has two spare tickets £25 each front row of the Circle.
