Part of the Barbican's Kubrick season.
After shooting the opening scenes, producer-star Douglas sacked director Anthony Mann and installed his first choice, Kubrick, who had originally been vetoed by the studio.
Unfazed by the massive logistical problems and the host of star (and producer) egos, Kubrick created what Peter Ustinov described as the most intelligent epic film ever made, though, unable to make the changes that he wanted, he never accepted it as entirely his own work.
