3 HILLS WALK, Hove - Hassocks, East Sussex
1 December 2007: 3 HILLS WALK
OUT walkers are invited stay fit and to join BLAGSS on an exhilarating 7.5 mile Downland linear walk from Hove, straight out over the downs to Hassocks. This walk is convenient for those from Brighton / London / Crawley / Lewes / Worthing areas.
This walk is led by Andy with Brighton Lesbian and Gay Sports Society. Those wishing to take part should register by visiting www.blagss.org and contacting the co-ordinator from the walking page for more info. This is a strenuous route that will require good fitness. Walking boots and warm / waterproof clothes, hats and gloves, will be essential this time of year. Bring a chocolate bar and a thermos flask if you have one. We will keep up a good pace to stay warm in the winter weather, however you will be rewarded by some excellent views (weather permitting) and optionally, a drink and/or a pub meal near the end.
Setting off at 11.05 AM we will soon leave the city behind and cross the A27 on the high level footbridge. Initially following the route of a Victorian steam railway we will climb steadily towards Devil's Dyke, with some lovely views out to sea. We will skirt the perimeter of the Dyke and get some great views of this landmark, before continuing on via Seddlescombe valley to scale Newtimber hill (204m). After this we will drop down over the A23 at Pyecombe before climbing again over the summit of Wolstonbury Hill (206m), getting a view of the Jack and Jill windmills. Finally descending across farm land to the pub at Clayton where the Brighton railway dives into the famous tunnel, scene of a horrific crash involving two steam trains about 100 years ago. From there an easy 20-minute walk on tarmac will take us to the train station. Total height gain approx 1000'.
In case the walk is cancelled by bad weather, message out ID outdoorladinhove http://www.outeverywhere.com/people/phi.cgi?who=200801&u=3106147442BC2 to say you are coming and include a mobile phone number ** NB If the weather is marginal we will do a shorter route not ending at Hassocks. A decision will be made by noon on Friday 30th November and the BLAGSS website adjusted accordingly.
