Did anyone else see this last night?

I found it one of the most horrific and disturbing pieces of television I'd seen in a long time. The casual filming, and indeed encouragement of acts of violence amounting to assault and GBH was simply appaulling. And then seeing the smug attitude of the young pillocks who encouraged the fighting, filmed it, and then put up the videos for entertainment (how is assault of a child funny) or as one-upmanship or in a competition - it was just dreadful.

But then, to make it worse, we had the cowardly, pathetic defence by YouTube. Their defence was twofold:

• This is real life. We're only showing what people are really doing.
• We don't police the stuff posted - that's for our membership. We don't believe in censorship.

So as a result, YouTube makes no effort to identify videos of crimes being committed before they're posted. Films of children being kicked into busy roads. Films of kids being beaten around the face with bicycles. Being kicked by gangs of young people, many of them filming it. Ignoring the feelings of the victim, by allowing this stuff to be spread across the internet.

YouTube allows itself to be used as a medium for gang communications and challenges, with videos of children as young as 12 and 13 waving guns, breaking into police cars.

And YouTube say they have no legal responsibility to take this stuff to the police. If the police want to provide them with the paperwork, then that's fine, they'll comply.

Personally, I find this cowardly, repulsive, and morally reprehensible. Censorship? Not allowing films of quite graphic violence to be shown to anyone who wants to watch it, knowing full well this isn't fiction, this isn't some computer game, or Marilyn Manson, this is some real child getting a real pasting. And YouTube think this is "real life" and people shouldn't be hidden from it?

What do you think? Censorship, or moral responsibility?
