This is a single option poll: "How would you handle a situation in which a work colleague, or a senior staff member, made a homophobic comment, either with the intention to offend, or without caring whom it may offend?"

  • Leave it - life's too short.: 6 votes
  • Leave it - if you report it, you won't get management support anyway.: 3 votes
  • Have a quiet word with your colleague and leave it at that.: 4 votes
  • Challenge your colleague in front of others - if s/he can dish it out, s/he can take it.: 27 votes
  • Report it so that your manager is aware, but say that you don't want to take it any further.: 0 votes
  • Report it, and make it official.: 13 votes
  • Other (please specify).: 2 votes

"a homophobic comment, either with the intention to offend, or without caring whom it may offend?" I think these two situations are totally different and it would also depend on exactly how offensive it was mildly or greatly and also what the circumstances were.

Generally I would challenge it and then it would also depend on what the reaction was - also if it was a first offence or the culmination of a situation

etc etc - i don't think there is a one size fits all answer
