A topic from Work & Money: Employment

In November 2006 my employer agreed in principle that I should be redeployed on health grounds. However, I agreed that it wasn't an urgent redeployment and that I could continue in my current job for some time. However, I never thought it would be 19 months!

A few weeks ago I noticed a vacancy that I thought was suitable for me. HR agreed when I brought it to their attention and agreed to put me forward through the fast track redeployment priority system. I've now heard that the Department I wish to work for will interview me. I'm not really sure what will happen next, though HR have said that it will be sometime next week at a date and time to be advised. However, two days next week I'm on day release to do a course.

What should I expect? From this point on, is it just like a normal application as if I were an external candidate? If successful, will I have to serve my contractual month's notice with my current department? What differences are there between getting a new job with the same employer and getting a new job with a new employer?

I do think that you will need to refer to your Employee Handbook/Staff Manual for that one - as each company (and sometimes different departments in the same company) do things differently or even interpret the same information differently.

Usually the rule of thumb would be 30 days between being notified of the internal transfer and actually starting the new position but that will depend on if you need to hand over your current position to someone else and how your current department gets the 'someone' else.

I really don't think that my current department needs me, given the problems I have working there. Being out of term, they'll be able to redeploy someone to my duties immediately but they'll need a replacement by the start of the new academic year in October. There isn't a staff manual on redeployment that I know of and the national agreement just states that it's something to be determined locally.
