A quote from an job agency today:

"About you: With high attention to detail, you will have achieved a 1:1 or 2:1 in a mathematical, statistical or OR degree"

The classification system is 1, 2(i), 2(ii), 3 (neglecting ordinary and fail) - there is no 1:1.

It gives me no confidence in those writing these advertisments that there is any great appreciation for the classification of degrees and what they mean, just that a 2(i) probably will help in getting a tick in the right box whereas a 2(ii) won't.

Has the value of a degree been debased over the last 10 years or so? Ho will a graduate feel with a 2(ii) if there is automatic rejection from companies/agencies? Would they feel that the ten(s?) of thousands of pounds invested in their education worthwhile?

Well, it is a way of weeding out the less academically able people. And getting a 2:1 is usually proof that the student worked hard at university. I'm not saying that a 2:2 is at all invalid, but graduate recruiters do need to narrow people down based on some criteria, and classification of degree seems like an obvious one.
