A topic from Work & Money: Employment

Today I saw the Pathway to Work advisor and she took me through their career choices program (can't remember its actual name). It was by far the most sophisticated program of its type that I've seen and its recommendations were interesting. The top five, in order, were:

1. Picture Framer
2. Driving Instructor
3. Pharmacist
4. Hospital Pharmacist
5. Pharmacy Technician

I have no idea why the program thinks that I'm so suited to being a picture framer but I've ruled it out because it's poorly paid and people who do it are often self-employed, something that I definitely don't want.

Driving instructor is interesting because people have also stated that they think it's something I could do. However, I think that I'd find it really frightening and I don't think my coordination and reflexes are good enough.

If I could relive my life, pharmacy is the degree subject I would choose. I find it really interesting but it's not available to me because I already have a degree and couldn't self-finance my way through another.

That leaves pharmacy technician and I understand that this is a job for which training is done through day release. The pay is very similar to what I was getting in my last job. Also, many pharmacy technicians are part-time and that is something I want. I don't want to work more than 0.6FTE.

On Wednesday I have an appointment with the Disability Advisory Officer at the Jobcentre Plus. I intend to ask her to try and arrange a job trial or placement as a trainee pharmacy technician. I have been told that there is a real possibility of getting a trial or placement because the local hospital has previously had significant collaborations with Pathway to Work.

I would like to know more about the job and how job trialling/placements work. I have ideas in my head but I don't know if they're correct.

I feel ready to try work again under psychological supervision. I don't know if such supervision is possible. I just want to be absolutely certain that I don't suffer excessive mental stress.
