I'm hoping the font of all knowledge that is OUT can provide some guidance:

The bf, after getting his NCTJ diploma, wrote on-spec letters to various local newspapers. One in particular called him in for an interview - which turned out to be the editor and the finance director taking him to the pub round the corner for lunch - and the next day rang to offer him a job.

They agreed a starting date and salary, and he started working there.

he hasnt got a written contract, or even a job ad that sets out terms and conditions of employment. he's asked the editor for this repeatedly (at least six times) but keeps getting fobbed off.

So - the questions:
1 - what sort of notice period do they have to give him? It's not a temp job, so i wouldnt have thought those rules applied?
2 - What notice would he have to give them? He's pissed off with the barrel-bottom ethical standards (Dear Mr X, How do you feel about your young daughter getting mauled by that rottweiler last week? How does she feel about being ugly and disfigured for the rest of her life?) of the paper, and the fact that it's a small local paper and the only other writer is the editor's gf - which means she does bugger-all work - leaves him with a mountain of work to do every day and it's stressing him to pieces. So he's looking for work elsewhere.
3 - What sort of leave entitlement does he have? we're planning a holiday to go see my family in Australia and Singapore - but can't yet make plans in case he's still working there in three months' time.

All other advice/suggestions also welcome! From how one should deal with managers like that, to alternative careers for disillusioned journalists, whatever.
