I want to move my PC into another room which doesn't have a phone socket. So what equipment do I need to enable me to do this and still be able to go online? I don't want to use an extension cable.

I just don't know anything about wireless stuff and have no idea what it is I need to look for.

If you have a wireless router you just need a wireless adaptor for your PC.

How do you connect to the Internet at the moment?

I don't think I've got a wireless router. The PC is just plugged into the phone line at the moment (well, there's a broadband modem and those little filter things...).

You could use this:

You need something like this:

The router/modem replaces your current USB modem. It plugs into the mains for power and the phone-socket for your network connection.

You need to configure it with your broadband connection details and it then initiates the connection with your ISP, rather than your PC doing it.

The USB adaptor plugs into your PC and provides a wireless connection between it and the router, thus freeing you place the PC anywhere within wireless range of the router.

Thanks Rob - that looks more like I was kinda expecting and your explanation of what goes where, and does what, has helped me to understand just exactly how it works.

No worries matey :o)

You should find it fairly simple to setup, especially if you buy a 'kit' like that, with both parts being from the same manufacturer.

What I'd suggest doing is setting it up in your current 'computer room' first to ensure that it works and then move the PC to the other room, from whence it should carry on working... famous last words there of course LOL

One other thing - unless you're a hermit living halfway up a mountain, make sure access to your wireless router is password-protected. That way only your computer (and those of people you give permission to) can access your broadband service.
