photoI'm a geek. I'm a nerd. I'm a teacher of small children. I'm shy. I'm crude. I like chocolate. I like rain. I'm hopeless at reading people. I find myself having the strangest conversations. I live in the middle of bloody nowhere. I don't smoke. I sometimes drink. I split infinitives. And I've currently got a number of Broadway musical CDs copied onto my MP3 player.

Hello!

I hereby declare this can of worms open...

Today I caught a train. Nothing unusual about that, you might think. I catch lots of trains. Sometimes they don't turn up, and then I don't catch them.

Anyhoo...

The point...

As I was walking down the ramp to the platform (my local station is a two-platform, unmanned station) I caught scent of 'that smell'. You know the one (or maybe you don't) - the smell of weed, marijuana, whatever you want to call it. As I rounded the bottom of the ramp there was a family of 4 (mum, dad, two kids) sat on the bench and mum and dad were enjoying their spliff.

The kids were sat oblivious to it all.

Across on the other platform were two station cleaners. The offenders were clearly not bothered at them seeing or smelling what they were doing.

When they clocked sight of me, they did nothing to disguise or hide what they were doing.

When did we accept drug use in our society?

I'm not a prude. Far from it. I'm anti-drugs after being woken up at 2am about a dozen years ago to take the friend of a friend to A&E after a reaction to something he'd taken. None of his friends were willing to go because they'd been on stuff. And I do believe that one drug can lead to another - the slippery slope theory.

But for these particular people to be so brazen about it, not to mention not giving a damn about the effect on their children, then we must have been letting an awful lot slide.

About 5 years ago, most people where I live wouldn't've known what the smell was.

Six months ago, the same smell wafted through the open window of my primary classroom window - and one of my 11 year olds looked up from her work and said "Oh, yeah, that's weed. Wotsisface sells it just down from school." And then got back on with her work.

Meh.

It bothers me.

I'll get down off my soapbox now.

Meh.
