I think it is MAESTRO who are advertising their debit card as "The New Cash" with their witty little "Cash is Dead", "RIP Cash" etc slogans. There's even adverts on the Underground Way In gates stating "Coins - Expect Delays".

Well I served two people yesterday one after another. The first bought a ticket, slipped me some cash and was gone in about 15 seconds. The second put £1.50 on their Oyster card and passed through a debit card. After explaining that the card went in the chip and pin machine he proceeded to put it in backwards. Took it out and then put it in upside down. Finally got the message through that it went face up and chip in first. After a few seconds waiting it turned out that he hadnt pushed it in far enough so he had been timed out and we had to start again. Finally it went through - and the card payment was rejected by his bank. So he then brought out a wad of notes and paid in cash!!!!! The whole transaction took about four minutes and we finally got done.

I'm sorry, MAESTRO, but I know which one of the two I'd have preferred to be standing behind in the queue! Maybe they could change their advert from "Coins - Expect Delays" to "Debit Cards - Expect Morons who cannot understand the concept of chip and pin and pay for ridiculously small amounts by card and hold everyone up" though I guess that wouldnt fit in the allocated advert space!
