I hope someone can point me in the right direction. I have a Dell deskop which is about 3 years old. It has gradually been getting slower and slower over the past 2 years. Exactly the same thing happened to my previous Dell desktop. My computer is XP home edition with a Pentium processor, it has 256 MB of RAM.
In the last few weeks the computer has become almost unworkable. I get the dreaded "not responding" message in every sort of programme. Yesterday this happened well over 100 times, I have to control / alt / delete to close the programme to do anything. It happens in every time of programme : internet explorer, pictures, Word, even when opening control / alt / delete the computer can sometimes "hang" for a minute or more.
About 10% of the time, the computer may run smoothly. I have searched endless websites and message boards and I am totally confused at the advice given. This seems to be a very common problem, so I was hoping that there might be common answers. In answer to your likely questions, no I do not have a virus, yes I defragment and clear our temporary internet files, and run disk clean up. My hard disk is only about one third full. Nothing makes any difference whatsoever.
I read that my registry needs cleaning, elsewhere I read that registry cleaners are a complete waste of time and make no difference. I once came across a website with 20 tips on how to speed up a slow computer, I did almost everything suggested (eg removing stuff from desktop and from start up) none of which made the slightest bit of difference.
When you google this type of problem, all you get is links to products, and conflicting advice.
An on-line friend suggested to me that pcs which hang all the time may need a good cleaning inside. I have no idea how to do this.
I really don't want to buy a new pc yet. I don't have friends who live near who are technically minded, and technically I am pretty ignorant, so I dont want to attempt anything like re-installing windows or anything like that.
I have come across a website www.pchomehelp.org which offers a home visit to fix computer problems at £30 per hour and then £7-50 per additional 30 mins if necessary. I am really desperate for some help, and am seriously considering contacting them.
Any suggestions welcome, especially about www.pchomehelp.org or similar organisations. |
