So, I was quite excited when I read the headline on the Evening Standard a couple of weeks ago, about "Giant Fans To Cool The Tube"

I never read the actual article, but I imagined huge industrial size fans blowing through the network, maybe on ground level, blowing cool air down into the tunnels.

Now this morning I've seen one, and what a sad little thing it was. In Kings Cross they've got this, admittedly big for a home or office fan, about 2 feet diameter, stood rather pathetically on a pole, blowing a bit of air around in one of the escalator halls. It would be a powerful fan for a small room, but makes absolutely no difference to the unpleasant atmosphere in a big tube station. You can just about feel it for about 1 second as you walk past it.

Is that it? Is it just another non-policy? Another soundbite, like the tube drinks ban, that sounds good on the front page of the SubStandard, but actually has no effect whatsoever?

Well, at least it looks like it didn't cost the taxpayer much :-)
