A topic from OUT Website: Positive and Encouraging Stories

So according to "what is the worst thread ever"?, quickfind:325583 (started by the now unfortunately deleted yngvi) my thread on counting to a million has been voted the "most pathetic thread ever". It has been variously described as "anal", "dull" "uninspired", "utterly pointless" and "the most boring thread in 18 months"

Now i'm not offended by this, in fact i'm feeling quietly proud. I don't think my thread needs defending, and i'm slightly loathe to start yet another thread on this topic, but i did want to make a couple of general points, which i can use this thread to illustarte

there were maybe several reasons why is started this thread, all of which are true to some extent. Perhaps i started it because, being somewhat autistic, I love numbers, and was just indulging my autistic side - and i don't think there is anything wrong with that. Perhaps i started it because i thought it would be fun, in a a strange way. Perhaps i started it to cause mischief, because I suspected it would produce some "oh god, OUT is sooo boring these days" responses. Perahps i started it for a philosophical reason, to underline the fact that all threads have a point, even if the only point is to be utterly pointless

I talked on quickfind:323664 about the inherent ridiculousness of ascribing any intrinsic value to OUT threads. Some support threads have a very specific point, so do threads arranging meetings. But most threads, irrespective of their subject, have no more point than letting people waste some time chatting to other people and generally de-stressing. And that seems to be a very good point to me, and perhaps the point which the "count to a million" thread is supposed to be underline

And to any one who hates this thread, or any thread at all, I would say "IF YOU FIND IT BORING DON'T READ IT"!!!! It is really as easy as that - and you even have a nice Ignore button to make it go away. Just go and start a thread on something you find interesting - and i shall read it, contribute to it or ignore it as i see fit

I think this is actually an important and serious point to make, because it hardly encourages newcomers to start new threads if they are afraid of appearing in "worst threads ever" polls or getting sneered at for being pointless

And finally, a couple of other points on the "count to a million" thread. it has received over 630 posts, or an average of around 90 posts a day, from over 40 posters (who are all lovely) who presumably have derived some enjoyment from it. It hs contained some jokes and some interesting conversation, is completely harmless, it has contained no personal attacks, and no bitching about anybody

So what exactly is wrong with that?

ummmm sorry about the length of the essay
