I have occasionally found that rogue Chinese sites manage to takeover genuine websites and send their information, rather than the desired site's. Just now one took over the BBC website. This one was cleverer than previous ones I've encountered. Previous ones just reroute to their site and it shows as the URL. To defeat it, simply block cookies from the site and reload.

The rogue site that just tried to oust the BBC website was different in that it the URL still said www.bbc.co.uk . Blocking cookies didn't work but it only took about two minutes to find a method that did work. Right click on any part of the page that isn't a link, select "View Page Info" and then view media. At the bottom of the thing that opens is the name of the rogue website and a tick box saying "block images" from it. This particular site, page.ename.cn seems relatively harmless, just advertising, but it's annoying. Ticking the tick box and reloading brought the BBC website back.

I'd be curious to know how these rogue websites do this. They are not picked up as viruses by Sophos for Mac. They don't actually seem to be that evil, in that they only seem to contain advertising, but they are evil in that they usurp a desired website and override any attempt to get onto the desired page. It seems that one has to block them one by one as they appear. Fortunately, that appears to be less often than once a year.

The browser I'm using is Firefox for Mac.
