photoLooking for friends (and more) to do life with. I've some good mates already, but you can never have too much of a good thing. Except life & pavlova. And like Einstein, I'm not sure about the former...

A topic from Technology: Web

A friend's website was recently hacked by a group of Russian criminals who intended to use it to install trojans onto machines accessing the site. Apparently the group specialises in small sites running on Linux or Windows servers, and the trojans are downloaded and installed on home computers when the page is accessed using Internet Explorer on a Windows machine.

While currently the viruses involved (there are at least two) only affect Internet Explorer, it's possible that they'll start attacking Firefox as well. Therefore if you use IE or FF make sure you run regular full virus checks. I'f you're using IE6 (or below) upgrade to IE7 or FF if you can - you can port all your bookmarks etc. over to both from IE6, and they're both much safer (as well as being better in sooo many other ways).

If you think a site may have been compromised let the Webmaster know ASAP.

I'm clueless: what's a trojan? I know it's something along the same lines as a virus but ...
How do we clueless ones know whether to think a site is compromised?
Thanks in advance.

Simply put, a trojan is a program which claims to do one thing, but in reality does something else, typically (though not necessarily) destructive. Viruses are also typically, but not necessarily, destructive - the second virus ever created, Reaper, was designed to wipe out the first, Creeper.

The reference is to the Trojan Horse.

Wikipedia has a good article - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trojan_horse_%28computing%29

You don't - the first my mate knew about the hack was when an error message started appearing on people's browsers, and that's hardly an unusual occurrence on Windows! This is why I err on the side of caution and check my own Windows computer for viruses regularly (if anyone knows of a virus checker for Linux that would be great).

I rely on computer whizzes to recognise trojans ;-)

Thanks for that. I use Firefox because I got fed up with IE continually freezing. And I have an abiding hatred of the pc and its associated software, collapses, reboots etc etc. I do the usual checks with Norton (updated regularly) and trust I am protected. So I am trying to move away from pcs to Apple technology as money becomes available. I have the MacBook.
