During today, so the front will continue its steady movement with colder air behind, but nothing quite as cold as the end of the week (more on this below).

The rain will push into the South-west, Midlands and Wales by this evening, reaching the far South-east during the early hours. Behind this, clear skies will allow an overnight frost for a time however winds will pick up, reaching gale force during Wednesday morning across Central and Southern areas.

During Wednesday, heavy rain will push into Scotland, initially as sleet and snow above 500m. This band of rain will then head South during Thursday with strong winds ahead of and behind the frontal system. Behind this front the temperatures will drop rapidly with snow across Northern areas on Thursday. Winds are likely to be funneled through the English Channel with severe gales possible during Thursday.

Into Friday and the Arctic Pipeline opens... sub-zero air will flood South across the UK bringing heavy snow to Scotland with blizzards across the hills and a raw feel to the weather across all parts of the country.

As with any Northerly, the snow is usually restricted to Northern facing coasts. At present, the worst of the weather is expected across Scotland, in particular Western Scotland on Friday.

Dig out them sexy long johns, look like we shall need them after all this mild weather!
