Following on from Matthew's thread about film casting, something I've been thinking about lately (because of the incesant repeats on UK Gold), is whether many of our classic tv sitcoms could ever have been successful without the wonderful characters cast to the main roles...

Arthur Lowe as Captain Mainwaring in Dad's Army
Harry H Corbett and Wilfred Brambell in Steptoe
Paul Eddington as Jim Hacker in Yes (Prime) Minister
Penelope Keith et al in The Good Life

I really think that the cast made these shows, and that had anyone else ever been cast in their stead, the shows probably wouldn;t have been so successful.

But can you think of others who could have successfully been cats to these classic roles?
