The iconic yellow taxi of Manhattan. And it is Manhattan, rather than the whole city. In Brooklyn they seem to drive black limousines and the drivers look like intimidating Mafiosi. However, recently I watched North by Nerthwest, which was filmed in colour at the end of the 1950s. Part of the action takes place in New York and the taxis were all sorts of bright colours. Yet, as early as I can remember people talking about New York, I remember remarks about "yellow cabs". I was born in 1964 and I'm a quarter American, so I was interested in the US from a very early age. |
