Port Elizabeth - A bull elephant trashed a new tractor in the Karatara forest in Knysna, the Eastern Province Herald reported on Tuesday.

The report said the wild elephant, known as Klein Jan, came across the blue tractor parked on a forest road he apparently wanted to cross.

Sanparks official Hylton Herd said rangers had been tracking the elephant.

The animal was well known for trashing man-made objects in his habitat, and did not seem to like objects smelling of diesel.

"He has punctured diesel drums and he's even punctured the tyre of a three metre high machine, or maybe it's fun to puncture tyres. Elephants are playful beings, so who knows the reason?

"An elephant is a big animal and ultimately if something is in his path and he doesn't like it there, he can make a plan," said Herd.
