ITV does Come Dine With Me. Not a copycat, honest.

I love Come Dine With Me, it makes my sundays watching five of them back to back.

Indeed I have a bet going with both quickfind:j_thundercats and quickfind:gayrath_resurrected that I could beat them hands down in a culinary cook off.

But isn't it a bit old for ITV to jump on the bandwagon with?

The article below is from The Guardian and it'll be interesting to see if they can justify their "original format" tag, especially given Michael Grade's insistance that copycat shows are no longer to be commissioned.

Personally, I'm waiting for Celebrity Dining On Ice.

ITV1 has commissioned a daytime series that will see amateur cooks attempting to be the best dinner party host in a show that bears distinct similarities to Channel 4's hit Come Dine with Me.

Be Our Guest, which is being made in-house by ITV Productions, will feature different couples hosting dinner parties over the course of five days with the winning pair taking home a cash prize.

The show, which is currently advertising for guests to take part in Swansea, is billed as a "nationwide search to find the UK's best dinner party hosts".

Channel 4 Channel 4's daytime hit Come Dine with Me takes a similar format, with five individuals cooking dinner over the course of a week and the winner taking home a cash prize.

The show, which has been nominated for a Royal Television Society award for best daytime programme, has become one of Channel 4's biggest daytime shows, pulling in more than 2 million viewers. Come Dine with Me is made by Granada Factual London, which is also part of ITV Productions.

An ITV spokeswoman confirmed the new show was in production but made clear it was an "original format".

"It is in very early stages but it is an original format," she said. "We will announce full details in due course."

A Channel 4 spokesman declined to comment.

One of ITV executive chairman Michael Grade's first announcements when he joined the broadcaster was that he would clamp down on "copycat" shows, describing the practice as "creatively bankrupt".

"We've been very quick to copy other people's formats," he said in March last year. "We've got to wean ourselves off the habit."
