SO, the results of the "New Seven Wonders" is out. Well, it came out July 7, I'm a little slow. The results were (in no particular order) (http://www.new7wonders.com/index.php?id=633&L=0)

* The Great Wall of China
* Petra, Jordan
* Christ the Redeemer, Rio
* Machu Picchu, Peru
* Chichen Itza, Mexico
* The Colosseum, Rome
* The Taj Mahal, India

I must say I'm a bit dissapointed. The whole campaign seems a bit pointless to me. I find it especially silly that they say it's the "official" list. Weird.

The result is also really surprising. Christ the Redeemer is particularly odd. It's not that great surely? There's an exact copy in Lisbon - why didn't that get included?

Why Chichen Itza? I was there the other week. Sure, it's nice, but it's not as great as Angkor Wat in Cambodia or Borobudur in Indonesia or even Teotihuacan in Mexico.

This probably confirms my suspicions all along. It's just a pointless media exercise. The "winners" are the people with the most mobile phones to vote!

I was in Angkor Wat earlier this year and the people wered almost desperate for me to vote for them. Such a shame they didn't win.

i find the whole idea of there being preeminent 'wonders' depressing.

Bavaria, Scotland and Scandinavia never make these lists and yet they hold some of the most astonishingly beautiful natural and manmade environments in the whole world.
