"More than two thousand free Metrolink travel vouchers were downloaded from the Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) website, as people headed out on the trams to support businesses across the region.

Transport leaders are hailing the travel offer, which gave up to five people the chance to go anywhere on the entire Metrolink network for free on Sunday, a ‘huge success'.

Councillor Andrew Fender, Chair of the TfGM Committee, said:

'Metrolink plays a vital part in connecting people to the many attractions for which our region is renowned, and we are proud to be part of encouraging people back into the city and surrounding areas."

I can't wait for my local tram station to open (Holt Town) on the East Manchester/Ashton line next year.

It's not much of a network at the moment so you wouldn't have been able to travel very far but that's already changing with the recent opening of the line to Chorlton and St Werburgh's Road and the further 'big bang' extensions to Oldham, Ashton and Media City.

I went out to Media City yesterday it's a good length of a trip. It also picks up a decent speed beyond Deansgate. I was quite impressed.

I love the trams and public transport in general. We were promised the tram extension past my house to Sports City (Etihad Stadium) by John Prescot back in 2000. He promised it would be built in time for the Commonwealth Games in 2002 and then the government pulled the plug.

It's taken a major campaign to obtain the funding for the 'big bang' project and the government threatened to pull the plug again unless Greater Mancunians voted for congestion charging. Well, the majority of us stuck two fingers up to the government so it was a big surprise when the government relented.

The speeds attained in 'off street running mode' are rather fast. I hope you enjoyed your sejour in Manchester and Salford.

Meanwhile - I've been waiting for my Ancoats tram for 11 years.
