The RMT have negotiated two separate deals with transport operators and have reached amicable deals without having to resort to strikes.

(For the benefit of those who claim striking is always the first weapon).

"A long-running dispute involving thousands of Network Rail workers which almost led to industrial action, is likely to end after union leaders decided to recommend a deal on jobs and pay, it was announced today.

RMT general secretary Bob Crow said: "At a time when the doom and gloom merchants are telling working people that they must accept pay freezes, job cuts and a grim Christmas and new year our Network Rail maintenance members have shown that if you stand together in a strong trade union you can win."

"'The pay award of 5.2% on South West Trains sets a clear benchmark for our negotiators and for the transport sector as a whole.

'Our members didn't create this crisis, it was the bankers, and on the day when the return of the City bonus culture is back in the news with a vengeance we are sending out the clearest possible signal that working people don't need to be bullied into paying the price for the greed and excess of the speculators."
