"Ken Livingstone, Labour candidate for Mayor of London, has called on the Government to consider extending the proposed Birmingam to London High Speed 2 rail link from Euston to Waterloo to provide new cross-city journey opportunities."

"Speaking on his LBC 97.3 show on Saturday morning, Mr Livingstone voiced concerns that Euston will be unable to cope with the extra passengers generated by HS2.

"You look at the map and you think that the obvious thing to do is – as [HS2] comes into Euston, it also goes underground for two and a quarter miles and comes up at Waterloo," said the former Mayor.

"So instead of the congestion of all the trains coming in and out of Euston, you'd have 25 trains an hour coming from the south east of England, through London and straight on out to the north.

"The extra expense of that two and a quarter mile tunnel would massively change the cost-benefit analysis.""

Wow! What a brilliant idea - though I don't really see it happening.

Would be nasty having to get onto the train at Euston in such a scenario.

I wonder if there'd be some kind of "no cross London tickets" available to stop commuter overcrowding - if so Ken's wrong about it helping congestion and being like an additional Crossrail... if not, yeah, you've got a point during rush hour.

Presumably as with all High Speed trains, all seats would be reserved, and there would be no tickets sold for cross London trips.

It would be expensive but probably worthwhile.

They're not reserved on HS1...

Oh really, I am surprised...

My apologies.

It's cause they're not fully booked yet

LOL! Well, if they're going to wait for 100% occupancy, it'll still be fairly awkward (actually, I understand HS1 is phenomenally busy during the Peak - so much so that they've had to strengthen the stock).

For once I agree with you and Ken. I think that with a lot of remodelling, the ex Eurostar platforms could be extended into a tunnel to carry on to Euston and the North. Perhaps the way to avoid overcrowding would be to have trains that stop at Waterloo not stop at Euston and vice versa.

It had to happen eventually ;-)
