I work for London Underground and had a spare shift today, so no duties to cover i could manage my own time. Decided to pop down to Green Park Station and see a Supervisor m8 who was on duty, cadge a cuppa and bacon sarnie off of him and catch up with the latest gossip. Well we got chatting about the disused stations on the Piccadilly Line and said to him i'd like to go down to Down Street station one day to have a butchers (its between Green Park and Hyde Park Corner stations, you can actually see the cages and sidings as you travel thru on the trains today). He said, well no time like the present, lets go take a look. Equipped with Dragon Lamps we set off and after a 5 min walk came to the entrance, went in and wow!! Its like stepping back in time!

Down Street closed in 1932 shortly after opening because of Lift problems and was commandeered by the War Dept for use by Churchill and his staff. Well upon entering you see maroon and white tiled walls which lead to a spiral cast iron staircase with a one man lift shaft running down the centre of it. Half way down you come to the 'executive wash rooms' (the old sign still one the wall) where the original bath, sinks and toilets remain to this day! You stand there and think, did Winston really get him ample frame into that bath! Its all covered in dust and muck, but still fascinating to look at. Carry on down you come to the passageway that separated the two platforms very much like the deep level stations of todays tube. The platform edges still exist though some of the nosing stones have fallen away, plenty of war time signage directing you to the communications room, executive offices, radio room etc, truely amazing! There are masses of small rooms all the length of the station and platforms where people would've beavered away with war work not seeing any daylight for hours on end and then you come to the comms room. The old phone exchange desk is still there! Ok its in a sorry state of repair, but wow, its just amazing to see this stuff still sitting there!

We spent a quick 40 mins down there, its a shame its in such a sorry state, but glad i've seen it in the flesh and got a taste of how claustrophobic it must've been down there day in day out.

Anyway sad i know, but thought some of you might be interested in it :o)
